I have shingles.
It absolutely sucks.
Until this week, I'd only heard of shingles and I thought only old people got shingles. Apparently not.
I went to the school nurse thinking that I had a bad head cold/hives and it turned out I had shingles.
I'm on a strong anti-viral medicine, along with vitamins, Sudaphed, and Aleve. When I take my meds 3x a day, I'd be lying if I said I didn't feel like a granny. Heck, people in the caf thought I was a pill popper! hahahah
It'll take about 2-4 weeks for it to run its course, which means I'm have them over my birthday and Christmas, while I'm in Florida :(
As much as this upsets me, it could be much worse.
There is girl that goes to school with me and she had a stroke about a month ago. She is undergoing some serious health complications. Brittany is in the hospital right now.
Visit her Facebook page here! :)
This blog post was written by one of our EU student bloggers!
This semester I've been learning alot about perspective. This is one of those times that is uncomfortable, but I'm trying to make the best of the situation and try not to complain. I've been following along Brittany's facebook page and as I read her dad's updates, I can't help but feel thankful for my health. That I can walk, talk, see, and hear without complications. For that, I am very thankful.

Die Young
This might be my new favorite song.
It's so catchy.
My roommate and I dance to it at least twice a day.
Usually without pants on.
Speaking of pants hating, she left this treat on my facebook wall on Monday. I died
It's true. I HATE pants.
She knows the first thing I do is take them off when I get back from class.
Keeping it real,
Emily

No place like home
I'm home on Thanksgiving break. It's such a weird feeling. I'm in the town I grew up in and yet everything feels different.
But, I'm excited to be home with my family for the next 5 days! We have full days ahead.
I love being home because:
-I don't have to pay for laundry
-My own bed. Enough said
-Edible food such as eggs that taste normal, milk that's not in a nasty bag, and fresh fruits and veggies. It's the little things
-My own bathroom and shower. Peace
-I can wash dishes in a normal sized sink and wash things down the drain and not the toilet.
-Coffee already made for me when I wake up
-Late night chats with my parents
-Dance parties with the sibs
-I get to work at the ziplines on Friday! so pumped!
On a different note, I totally surprised my family last night. I was supposed to drive down tonight, but I showed up at 11:30 last night at the front door. My mom was shocked and just stood there haha. It's good to be home :)
Happy Thanksgiving!

On my heart: Israel and the Gaza Strip
My heart is heavy today.
I've been reading posts all day like this. My heart is breaking for the people of Israel.
My heart is especially breaking for Nadav. He was our tour guide in March. He was called up this morning out of reserves to help with the Gaza conflict. I can't even being to describe how I felt when I heard the news this morning.
Will you please join with me in prayer? I'm begging you.

The one thing I dislike about college
I know I've said this before, but I LOVE everything about college. It's awesome.
The only thing that I dislike so far is how expensive your books are! I'm already paying tons of money for college, then they make you buy these stupid expensive books. I especially love when your professor doesn't even use the book that they made you buy. Except not.
Thankfully there is a better option! RENT. Yes. You can rent your textbooks for the semester. It's saves SO much money.
Several websites offer this, but I love Campus Book Rentals. It's super quick and simple. Find your books you need and have them shipped directly to you. When the semester is over, just ship it back. Watch this video for more information! :)
What's also pretty awesome about CBR, is that they partner with Operation Smile. You can read more about this awesome program and how CBR helps here.
So, as you are getting ready to register for spring '13 classes and purchase textbooks, go to Campus Book Rentals and see just how much money they can save you. Instead of wasting money on textbooks, you can save it for a date night, a new movie, or some new clothes!

For example, I bought this book for my finance class this fall for around $175 online. With Campus Book Rentals, I could have rented it for around $50 instead. I wish I would have known about them in August!!
It's always such a pain to pay alot of moolah for textbooks and then lose money when you try and sell them back. Renting textbooks through Campus Book Rentals is the best way to go because you don't lose any money on your books.

Midterms? Check!!
My first ever week of college midterms are OVER!
RELIEF!!
It feels so good to walk out of a midterm and know that you worked your butt off studying! The hardest part is waiting to hear my grade.
This week I learned that:
Studying someplace new (library, coffee shop) really helps me focus better, rather than studying in my room so much.
After studying, studying, and more studying, sleep is very important. Get as much of it as you can!
Healthy meals and snacks are far better than junk food. Definitely helps keep me focused when I don't have a headache.
Exercise is the best stress reliever, or one of them anyway.
Going off campus for a few hours and getting away is sometimes the perfect thing. This week I ran down to Branson with my roommate and saw one of my sisters volleyball games. It was so nice to see my family really quick and get my mind off things.
Everybody gets stressed. Don't take it personal when they take things out on you.
One.more.day of classes then I'm going home!! wooo hooo!!
Happy almost weekend!!!

What I've learned: the good, the bad, and the ugly
College
One of the most incredible times. One of the most terrifying times. I've learned so much and I've only been here over a month.
I've been meaning to do a braindump and write about all the crazy memories that I've already made, but my life has been cray.
School: Some teachers are awesome, like total rockstars. They let us out of class early, make jokes in class, and declare Friday, Youtube Friday. Other classes having me wanting to shoot myself. Loooooong boring lectures and homework in large ungodly doses.
Workstudy: I interviewed for several workstudy jobs in August. I was hired to be the Office Assistant one of the guys' dorms. The athletic dorm. I'm not complaining. I love my job. I meet lots of super attractive athletic studs people. Need I say more? I got lucky for sure.
Sleep: Naps in the middle of the day are quite possibly the best thing about college. Ok I'm kidding, but seriously, it's awesome. I get back from class at around 11, and I don't have another class till 1. Snooze time! This just really makes up for the few hours of sleep I get every night.
Dorm Life: It's like a giant sleepover every night. Enough said.
My RA: Katie Baker. She's awesome! I love going into her room and having heart to heart talks with her.
Friends: I LOVE all the people that I'm meeting! I love all the memories that I'm making. Embarrassing, funny, serious, awkward.
Family: It's so weird calling/texting my parents during the day and not being able to talk with them in person. But I'm learning so much being away from home and I'm only an hour away. My mom bribes me with homemade food and free laundry :)

Ripped Pants
One of the worst things in life is when something is hilariously funny and you CAN'T laugh. It's the worst.
Today: we had a guest professor and he was lecturing on something very serious. Sex Trafficking.
Then he walked over to the computer to switch slides and out of nowhere his pants ripped. RIPPED!
RIPPED!
I died.
![]() |
pretend this hole is 10x bigger and in a more awkward place |
I lost it.
I started laughing. My suitemate Tessa that sits next to me starts dying of laughter.
And the prof just kept right on lecturing.
He finally said something and laughed it off, only about 15 minutes after the fact.
Call me a child, but I couldn't hold it in.
Then I tweeted about it.
SUE.ME.
Actually don't. I'm a poor college kid with no money.

#neverforget
Today is the 11st anniversary of September 11th, 2001.
Where were you?
I remember I was sitting in my living room early in the morning. I was 8 years old. My dad called my mom and said turn on the TV.
My dad worked in downtown PA and as soon as the first plane hit, their hotel went on lockdown because it was connected to the airport. I remember being very confused.
I vaguely remember the details of that day. I just mostly remember lots of pictures, TV reports, and sadness.

No Toilet Paper. My luck
I should just start a label for my blog titled Emily's luck. or lack of.
I'm dead serious. My luck is so bad.
Picture this. 12:56. Class begins at 1 down the hall.
I HAVE to pee. Sitting through economics class for 50 minutes without a bathroom is just not an option.
I take my 22 pound backpack, plus self into said stall. I quickly begin to relieve myself only to realize there is no toilet paper. Aunt Flow is also here for her monthly visit so dripping dry or doing without just can't happen.
Side note: I NEVER do the above, but a girl has got to think of all her options in a crisis.
So I decided I need to call for help. So I nicely yell in the cracks to the next stall for some TP. No answer. I try again this time a little bit louder. It is getting super embarrassing. The bathroom is full of college girls too. FreshMEAT right here.
Finally, I reach my hand under the door and grab onto her boots and get the girl's attention. "I'm so sorry, but I need some TP". Much to my relief, the girl was sups sweet and gave me some.
I'm sure she was rolling her eyes and wiping off her bedazzled boots where I put my hands. I'm pretty sure of it anyways.
and that my friends is my embarrassing story for today.
Happy Monday to me.

Sunday Social
1. What is the name of your blog and how did you come up with it?
Fate from 5'8. It was originally a beautiful beginning, but that seemed to be so common and used and I wanted something unique. I'm 5'8 obvi, and it just sounded good together. I wish there was a cute fancy story behind it, but there's that.
2. What do you love the most about blogging?? I LOVE meeting new people from all over the place! so.much.fun.
3. What are your 2 favorite posts you've written?
One of my more serious posts: on change right before I left for college.
My Milkshake: I'm the president of the Itty Bitty Titty Committee you know!
4. What is something you'd want to tell someone just starting out in blog world? Don't look at stats. It will ruin you and consume you. Just blog. Be yourself. And see what happens.
5. Biggest blogging learning experience you've had? I'm not sure if this is a learning experience or not but I've loved sponsoring Neely's blog this summer! I got over 100 new followers and met some awesome people! It gave my blog lots of exposure!!
6. Give us 3 blogs we NEED to be following that you love
Happpy Sundayyyy!!

Guest Post: Random Roommate
Hi Lovers!! I'm busy getting settled into college and all the new transitions! I'm SO excited to have Lauren guest blogging for me today! She's so cute and I just love her blog! Make sure to stop by and say hey!!!
Hi! My name is Lauren and I blog over at Life.Love.Lauren and I am stoked to be apart of Emily's blog! So while Emily is getting settled into school, I thought I would relive some of my first entering into college.
I went to New Mexico State University and graduated in December 2011 with my Bachelor's of Science in Nursing. I swam competitively in high school and looked at many schools with swimming scholarships. But somewhere in all of that I decided that I wanted to major in nursing and that my education came first before my swimming. So therefore I got a full ride academic scholarship to NMSU. I wanted to come out of school with no debt. It also helped that my boyfriend (who turned out to be my husband) also chose to go to NMSU. (He was super smart and got offers from UT Austin, MIT, etc in engineering.)
I remember I decided to go with getting a random roommate because I wanted the experience of meeting someone new and not messing up a current friendship by finding out that I couldn't live with that person. So in comes Karla my freshman roommate. She had never done laundry before (No worries, I taught her) and came from a totally different place than I did. She was definitely nice enough and we end up getting along. That is all you need! You don't need to make a best friend out of every person you meet, but just enjoy every experience you have. If it wasn't for Karla I wouldn't have met one my best guy friends!
So without further ado, let me embarrass myself with pictures!

Summer after Highschool: '12
My summer was crazy full. I work 60+ hours a week and I really wanted to make time for my friends/family and make lots of memories. Especially because lots of my friends were going to college out of state and I didn't know when I would see them again.
Late nights spent at Applebee's or Starbucks. Pool days and lake nights, movies, hammocking. Little bit of everything.
Here goes my insanely long Summa '12 recap. In no particular order. I just want to remember every detail.
My life story! ha! |
Late night coffee and boy chats with Amy!! |
Renewed my license. Hellllo permit face and minus 15 pounds. |
Visited my daddy :) |
Dinner 1 of 29 with these two! |
Starbucks with El-bell! :) |
Many retro nights at CS with Molly |
My favorite ginger |
Met a famous actor with Morgan |
Read this amazing book |
Church with this cutie pie |
Lunch date with Miss Julie :) |
VOTED!!! |
Trampoline and Ice Cream date with these two |
Drove the company truck like a boss |
Pool day with the bests |
Mission Trip to intercity STL to love on these sweet babies |

Tried to get tan. |
Cold Stone with my favorites. |
Lake Day Birthday |
![]() |
Mission Trip with Jared |
Met/ate lunch with my roomie Jenae |
Lake hammock and dinner with Alexis |
![]() |
Half price app's at App's with the crew |
Lake day with the Seester |
![]() |
Closed the ziplines too many times. But with a view like this, who wouldn't. |
Fender Bender :( |
![]() |
Filmed a retro Cold Stone commercial with him |
Worked with these boys |
![]() |
Hammocked with these two |
Funk Busting trips to Target with Kyle. |
Sent her off to school |
Tearful college goodbyes :( |
![]() |
Moved into college with her! |
This summer was full. I checked items off my bucket list, made new friends, said goodbye to others, ate way too much food, drank way too much coffee, and stayed up way too late. But I wouldn't have had my summa any other way.
